Hi Everyone,

Trek North Safaris is delighted to let you know that Daintree River Salt Water crocodile sightings are a big highlight of our fantastic tour at this time of the year. The cooler weather means these amazing cold blooded animals are regularly out of the water on the river banks in the warm sun. Our lucky passengers are getting close up looks at these huge and wonderful creatures in their natural habitat - no fences out there! Have your cameras ready!

Saturday June 12th was a great day to be out in the Agincourt Reefs, with
multiple sightings of Minke Whales on board POSEIDON. The first encounter
was with a solitary whale while at the dive site on Light Reef, and most of
the passengers were able to enjoy an in-water experience with the curious
animal while it circled the snorkellers close up, enabling Poseidon's
photographer to obtain several great shots. See image below.

When Poseidon reluctantly left the whale and moved on to the next site,
passengers and crew were rewarded by having three more whales circle the
boat during lunch, resulting in great top-side photo opportunities.

Poseidon is one of only 3 day boats permitted to conduct in-water
snorkelling with Dwarf Minke Whales, and now that they have "arrived" at the
Agincourt Reefs, many more encounters can be expected.

Thanks to the generous support of many donors like Trek North Safaris to ‘The Rainforest Rescue Foundation’, they have just purchased a 12th property in the Daintree. They signed the documents on 10th May 2010, so Lot 10 Milky Pine Rd is now safe from development and can continue to provide habitat for the endangered Cassowary and Bennett’s Tree-kangaroo (pictured) as well as many other unique and threatened species. Lot 10 Milky Pine Road is truly a special place. It is one of the most pristine properties they have been involved in purchasing so far, having never been cleared or developed at all. This means they have managed to secure a pocket of the Daintree that has been rainforest continuously for 100 million years! This property will help ensure that these vital links are maintained both for their scientific and aesthetic value well into the future. Buying back properties in the Daintree is the most effective way that we can take action to protect this habitat from development forever. Over the last 10 years, with the help of their supporters, Rainforest Rescue has now purchased 12 Daintree properties. That’s a significant achievement and one that has had an enormous impact on the ecology of the Daintree world Heritage listed Rainforest. In response to their appeal, hundreds of donors not only helped raise the $52,607 they needed to complete this purchase; they also contributed to a significant surplus of $10,839! This will be put towards their next property which they are looking for right now J Supporters of ‘Rainforest Rescue Foundation’ are determined to take positive action and realise their desire to see our unique and beautiful rainforest protected forever. Rainforest Rescue is a not-for-profit organisation that has been protecting and restoring rainforests in Australia and internationally since 1998 by providing opportunities for individuals and businesses to Protect Rainforests Forever. Their projects re-establish rainforests through planting, maintenance and restoration programs, as well as purchasing and protecting high conservation value rainforest and preserving its biodiversity. The future of Rainforest Tourism north of Cairns is under constant threat from developers and for its futures sake, and its inhabitants, it needs to simply be taken off the market. Trek North are proud sponsors of RRF and will continue to be so with your help. Thank you for your time and if I may leave you with this fact: Of the 19 most ancient plant families worldwide, 12 are found in the Daintree Rainforest!
Trek North is happy to let everyone know that we are rewarding those 'Early Birds' with a super discount. Check out our Website for details!

Rainforest Rescue are protecting rainforests with projects that re-establish habitat through planting, maintenance and restoration programs, as well as purchasing and protecting high conservation value rainforest. Wednesday, 24 March, 2010. In an announcement made today by Australian Traveller Magazine, Flames of the Forest at Port Douglas has been listed in the publication’s 100 Greatest Australian Gourmet Experiences.  It is the only dining experience north of Brisbane featured.

According to Australian Traveller Magazine, this prestigious list represents the best of the best foodie experiences from around the country, as determined by Australian Traveller Magazine’s panel of experts including such well-known identities as Matt Moran, Maggie Beer, Simon Johnson, Matthew Evans and Peter Russell-Clarke.

When announcing the winners today, The Australian Traveller team said, “To judge and rank the Greatest Australian Gourmet Experiences has never before been attempted. Restaurants are ranked almost every other day.  Producers and providores ditto.  But experiences that encompass restaurants, producers and anything remotely connected to food, all ranked together in the one list?  Not on your life.  Until now.”

According to the publication, the judging panel’s brief was to help decided how great an experience was on the basis of their own opinion or how strongly they would advise a close friend to seek out the experience.

In determining the final list, the publication had gathered more than 900 experiences.  The judging panel were then given a short list from which they then allocated points.  The final scores were then averaged for each of the experiences to arrive on the list.

Sales manager Natalie Johnson said her employer, Amelia Hannaford, and the entire team are ecstatic at hearing today’s news.  “We are so thrilled to be included and feel it is testament to what we believe is one of Australia’s best kept secrets.  Where else can you dine by candlelight in the rainforest?  It is truly special and memorable.

“We feel great pride in representing our region and the destination of Port Douglas in particular.  In making the list, we hope Flames of the Forest will focus attention on our town that is bursting at the seams with great restaurants,” she said.

Award-winning Flames of the Forest at Port Douglas has a magical new look for its 2010 season with the added benefit of a reduced carbon footprint.

Sales manager Natalie Johnson said the stunning events and dining venue had introduced environmentally friendly LED lights to further enhance the special effects of an evening of entertainment in the Tropical North Queensland rainforest.  Add to this, new tasting menus showcasing the region’s best seasonal produce and an enhanced program of Indigenous entertainment for a truly special night to remember.

“State-of-the-art lights have been installed in the black silk-lined ceiling allowing the creation of a range of looks to suit client requirements. The new system uses 30 per cent less power and is included in the venue hire so there are no extra charges for lighting,” she said.

“Seven new custom-made crystal bud light and glowing orb chandeliers complement the lighting, creating an unmatched elegance in off-site events. Combined with thousands of twinkling bud lights these create a look reminiscent of the night sky with planets and stars.”

Ms Johnson said Flames was also delighted to introduce three custom designed and locally manufactured bi-ethanol flaming vessels which were clean burning with no fumes.

“This renewable fuel has allowed us to bring the flames closer to the marquee to enhance the magic of the rainforest, at the same time lowering our carbon footprint,” she said.

“Combined with the roll-out of low voltage lighting to the surrounding rainforest, a solar hot water system for the kitchens and our continuing commitment to the One Person, One Tree, One World tree planting program, Flames of the Forest offers a true environmentally positive experience to clients.”

Tucked away in a fairytale pocket of rainforest, Flames of the Forest has a banquet seating capacity of 900 with all the infrastructure and comfort clients need, but with the magic only an off-site event can provide.
